Four things a nootropic label should tell you, and how many usually do

There are four things a label can tell you about an active ingredient. Most labels manage one. Knowing which four they are turns a shelf of identical-looking bottles into something you can actually sort.

1. Identity — what exactly is it?

Not “ginseng” but Panax ginseng, root. Not “bacopa” but Bacopa monnieri, whole plant. The species and the plant part change what is in the extract entirely: American ginseng and Korean ginseng have different research behind them, and the leaf and the root of a plant are not interchangeable.

A label that gives a common name and nothing else has told you the category, not the ingredient.

2. Amount — how much of it?

A number in milligrams, against that ingredient, not against a blend containing it. This is the one that gets hidden most often, behind a proprietary blend, and it is the one without which nothing else can be evaluated. No amount means no comparison — not against a study, not against a competitor, not against the same brand's previous formula.

3. Standardisation — how much of the active compound?

This is the one most people have never heard of and it is the difference between a serious label and a pretty one. “Rhodiola rosea 100 mg” tells you how much extract. “Rhodiola rosea 100 mg, standardised to 3% salidroside” tells you how much of the compound the research was about.

Botanical extracts vary enormously batch to batch. Without a standardisation, two products printing the same milligram figure can differ several-fold in what they actually deliver. The research is almost always run on standardised material, so an unstandardised extract cannot really be compared to it even when the amount matches.

4. Form — which chemical version?

Magnesium oxide and magnesium glycinate are absorbed very differently. Chromium picolinate is not the same as chromium chloride. Where a mineral or an amino acid appears, the form in parentheses is doing real work, and its absence is a small tell.

Scoring a label in two minutes

Take any bottle and count. Four out of four on every active is rare and worth paying for. Three is a good label. Two — identity and amount — is workable: you can at least compare it to the literature. One, where you get names inside a blend total, means the only honest description is that you do not know what is in it.
